How to cite a software in AMA

AMA software citation

There is no need to cite a software if it was free (e.g., freeware or shareware), however, if you purchased it, you should reference it.

To cite a software in a reference entry in AMA style 11st edition include the following elements:

  1. Title of the software: Italicize the title and capitalize the first letter of each major word.
  2. Version: Give the number or type of version.
  3. Location: Give the name of the city in which the publishing entity was located at the time of publication.
  4. Producer: Abbreviate the publisher's name.
  5. Year of publication: Give the year of publication.

Here is the basic format for a reference list entry of a software in AMA style 11st edition:

Title of the software [Computer software]. Version. Location: Producer; Year of publication.
